Our commitment is to improve STEM education by leveraging technology to create engaging content and introducing innovative teaching methods to STEM teachers with the aim of improving the learning outcomes of the students.

Our Thinking

Our goal is to improve the quality of and access to education in Nigeria. Our work is centered on 3 pillars:

Content Creation: By creating and curating engaging and interactive content guided by the curriculum and with the aid of digital labs which are game-like environments that simulate basic science concepts, we have been able to help students learn by exploration and thereby increasing their interest and participation in STEM.

Methodology: It is our understanding that the approach with which STEM is taught largely influences studentsโ€™ interest in STEM. Hence our focus on providing effective methods of teaching STEM subjects. We train teachers on the use of Inquiry-Based Learning which is a teaching technique that actively puts the students in the center of learning and encourages curiosity, collaboration, and critical thinking.

Teacher Training: This focuses on equipping teachers with the knowledge and capacity on the use of digital labs as an Inquiry-Based Learning approach to teaching STEM content in their classrooms. This is done by setting up communities of practice through STEM 'cells' within the schools. Here, the teachers regularly meet to encourage creativity, inquiry, and collaboration with the use of technology to improve the learning outcomes of students in STEM. We also provide effective professional development for both in-service and pre-service teachers to upgrade their teaching skills, master new teaching methods, and develop better proficiency in the use of technology.

Our Expressions

Mac-Arthur Project

Funded by the Mac-Arthur Foundation in Nigeria, this project ran as a pilot in 3 Nigerian states (Lagos, Jigawa and Kano) with 20 schools and over 800 students in SS1. We designed digital labs that mirrored the curriculum for physics, chemistry, and biology and trained the teachers to tutor their students using the digital labs as opposed to traditional methods. At the end of the project, the majority of the students demonstrated better understanding and retention of modules that were taught using the digital labs.

Go-GA Project

The GO-GA project is a European Union-funded project which seeks to accelerate the adoption of richer learning environments and learning outcomes for STEM in Africa. This programme consists of 8 consortium members from 8 countries that conducted large scale onboarding of teachers in 3 initial pilot countries- Nigeria, Kenya and Benin republic – upskilling them to use Inquiry Based Methods of Teaching as well as using the Go-Lab Ecosystem to design inquiry learning spaces for teaching STEM.

Spanning 3 years, the programme has grown from its initial 3 pilot countries with over 600 teachers developing and using Inquiry Learning Spaces to training and providing support to STEM teachers in Uganda, Ghana, Zambia and Senegal.

Safe Online with Facebook

The Safe Online with Facebook Digital campaign is a Facebook advocacy programme designed to help internet users develop the right skills required to stay safe as they explore the internet.

In its first two years, the programme successfully trained over 11,000 students in 200 schools across 10 cities across Nigeria. In 2020, the programme has successfully virtually trained over 5000 internet users in Nigeria despite the restrictions from COVID-19.

Virtual STEM Hub

Designed as a COVID-19 intervention for STEM teachers provided a learning and support platform for STEM teachers in Nigeria and Kenya during the shut down of schools as a result of the pandemic. The training sessions held on WhatsApp recorded over 500 teachers in its 2 cohorts that took place during the lockdown.
