NIMCURE is a collaborative research and development project between researchers from Nigerian Institute of Medical Research (NIMR) and Co-creation Hub. The project seeks to develop and pilot a digital tool to support and enhance adherence to treatment by Tuberculosis Patients in Nigeria.
Tuberculosis (TB) remains one of the leading causes of death worldwide and is considered as one of the most important infectious diseases across most of the developing nations (WHO, 2018). TB is a major public health threat in Nigeria and a leading cause of death in HIV infection.
While TB is curable, statistics show that Nigeria is currently ranked 4th globally, as one of the top countries with the highest cases of TB infections. There has been an increase in drug-resistant cases of TB which points to a lack of adherence to treatment by patients. This has, in turn, led to an increase in drug-resistant cases of TB.
This research project seeks to identify the extent to which technology can play a role in ensuring adherence of TB patients to treatment. The proposed solution involves the development of an interactive mobile application with key features that engages patients to take charge of their treatment.
In the coming months, we will pilot and test the solution and as the project progresses and shareย more information on our findings as well.
